Gabriel Louis de Caulaincourt was the son of Marc Louis, 3rd marquis de Caulaincourt. His mother was Henriette Le Cat d'Hervilly. His military career earned him the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis in 1772. In 1770 he married Anne Joséphine de Barandier de La Chaussée d'Eu (1751-1830) with whom he had four children. His son Arman Augutin Louis was born in 1883 and would become the 5th marquis de Caulaincourt.

In 1788 he was promoted to maréchal de camp. In 1792 he was promoted to lieutenant general. On 22 May 1792 he resigned from the army. After the Terror his rank was restored to him in 1795. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1805 and Napoleon granted him a seat at the Sénat conservateur (Conservative Senate), where he was a devout follower of the emperor. In 1808 he was created a comte de l'Empire. He died a few months afterwards and he was buried in the Panthéon in Paris.
