In 1880 he became a member of the Salon. He received a third-class medal for his "Le Retour du drapea" that was inspired by a poem by Paul Déroulède. "La Légende de Saint Denis" earned him a first-class medal in 1888. In 1886 he had married his student, Julie Feurgard. Their daughter Alice was born in 1888, but Julie died in 1892. After the death of his wife, he stopped painting historical scenes and concentrated on landscapes, portraits, and religious subjects.

Between 1889 and 1892 he made sketches for the decoration of the rooms of the Paris City Hall and for the Commercial Court in Paris, that still has two of his paintings including "Saint-Louis rendant visite à Boileau, prévôt des marchands et auteur d'un ouvrage sur les corporations" (1894). He decorated the choir of the Notre-Dame church in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Pyrénées-Atlantiques between 1895 and 1899. In 1908 he received the Legion of Honor. He died in 1924 in Paris. After his death Alice, who created watercolour paintings, lived in his house in Paris until her own death in 1973. She was buried in his grave at Passy cemetery in Paris.
