Josef Menschik was the son of the singer and choir director Clemens Menschik and his wife Fredierike von Setti. He was educated at the Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. He performed on the stages of Innsbsbruck, Karlsbad, the Stadtheater in Vienna, München, Augsbug and at the Raimund-Theater in Vienna.

In 1942 he played a small part in E.W. Emo's movie "Zwei glückliche Menschen" with Magda Schneider and wol Albach-Retty in the main parts. More films followed and he worked with Gerog Jacoby and Géza von Cziffra. In 1957 he had a small part in Ernst Marischka's "Sissi - Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin". His last appearance was in an episode of the television series "Hallo - Hotel Sacher... Portier!" in 1973.
