Max Hecker studied German language and literature as well as philosophy in Bonn. His thesis was about Arthur Schopenauer. He was invited to Weimar by the businessman Stavenhagen, whose son Bernhard was a student of Liszt.

In Weimar he was invited to work at the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv and he would stay there until the end of his life. He was involved in over 200 publications. He most important work was on the Sophien-Ausgabe of Goethe's works.

Hecker married Lili Kaiser and they had three children. Their daughter Jutta Hecker was an author. From 1936 the family lived at the Altenburg near the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv.
