Josef Max was the son of the painter and sculptor Josef Franz Max (1765-1838). He was educated by the wood sculptor Wenzel Schuhmann in Prague and afterwards under Joseph Bergler at the Art Academy in that city. He worked in Northern Bohemia and in Prague. He started his own studio in 1830 and in 1836 he became the director of the Art Academy in Prague. For the restoration of the Town Hall in Prague he created several large figures. Occasionally he also worked as a painter. He married Anna Schuhmann, the daughter of his teacher. They had five children, among them the famous painter Gabriel von Max.
