Heinz Heck was the son of Professor Dr. Ludwig Heck, the director of the Berlin Zoo from 1888 to 1931. In 1928 he became the director of Hellabrun Zoo in Munich and he held this position until 1969.

He played an important part in saving the European bison from extinction. Together with his brother Lutz he worked on breeding programs that attempted to recreate extinct species.

It is believed that he refused the title of professor during the nazi era. Different from his brother Lutz he was never a member of the NSDAP. In his old age he was completely blind. He died in 1982 in Munich.
