Patricia Hayes was the daughter of a clerk in civil service and a teacher. She appeared on the stage from the age of twelve. She was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and when she was eighteen years old, and she graduated in 1928. The next ten years she appeared in the theatre. Between 1940 and 1966 she appeared in comedies on television and on the radio. She received a BAFTA award for the title role in "Edna, the Inebriate Woman" (1971). She also appeared in films, including supporting roles in "The NeverEnding Story" (1984) and in "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988). Patricia Hayes married Valentine Brooke, known on the stage as Valentine Rooke. The actor Richard O'Callaghan (b.1940) is their son. The marriage ended in divorce. She received an OBE in 1987. She continued her acting career until the 1990s. In 1998 she died in Puttenham, Surrey. |
