Richmond Ritchie was the son of the jurist William Ritchie (1817-1862). He was still a brilliant student at Trinity College when he proposed to his cousin Anne Thackeray who was seventeen years his senior. She accepted him and he left college and entered public service with the India Office to provide his family with a living.

They had two children and a good marriage and he did well at the Indian Office although he probably worked too hard. From 1895 to 1902 he was private secretary to the Secretary of State Lord George Hamilton. He was knighted in 1907 for his services but he died from pneumonia in 1912.
