Johanna Roepman educated herself as a composer. She created works for orchestra, choir and piano. In 1914 she married the lawyer and author F. Bordewijk. They had a son, Robert, and a daughter, Nina.

Bordewijk wrote the libretto for her opera "Rontonde" (1941). During the 1940s and 1950s her compositions were the most successful. She received many commisions and in 1943 she received a prize issued by the Dutch State for "Sonate".
