Hermann Landois was a brother of the well known physiologist Leonard Landois. He studied Theology and Natural Science in Münster. In 1859 he discontinued his studies and was ordinated as a priest.

He worked as a teacher until his promotion in Greifswald in Zoology. In Greifswald he cooperatedd with his brother. Back in Münster he worked as a caholic priest and as a teacher again. In 1869 he was engaged as a private teacher at the Academy in Münster where he taught zoology. In 1873 he became a professor.

In 1874 the Allwetterzoo in Münster was founded and he became its first director. It was opened for the public in 1875. His worldy occupations led to his suspension as a priest in 1876. After 1883 he lived at the Tuckesburg in Münster near the zoo. There he created a monument for himself during his lifetime. It is now at the Allwetterzoo in Münster.
