Carl Joseph Gauss was a son of Carl Friedrich Gauss and his wife Johanna Osthoff. In his youth he supported his father with triangulations. He entered Göttingen University, but after he while he joined the army of Hanover in 1824. By 1834 he had reached the rank of Premier-Lieutenant.

From 1832 he onwards he worked with the cartographer August Wilhelm Papen on the "Topographischer Atlas des Königreichs Hannover und Herzogthums Braunschweig". It was published in 1847. From April to November 1836 he travelled in the USA. He married Sophie Friederike Erythropel (1818-1883) in Stade, Niedersachsen.

He resigned from the army in 1846 and became a direcor of the railway system in Hanover. In 1856 he received the title of Obernbaurath (chief bulding officer). He died in 1873 in Hanover.
