Karin Hempel-Soos grew up in Meiningen. She studied German language and literature as well as political sciences and economics in Dresden. In 1959 she fled from the DDR to the Federal Republic of Germany. She continued her studies in Cologne and Bonn and from 1960 onwards she lived in Bonn.

She was active in the women's movement and in 197 she was one of the founders of the Frauenhaus in Bonn. From 1980 onwards she worked as an author and a journalist, using the name Katherina Koslowsky. She also performed as a cabaret artist. In 1994 she became the director of the Haus der Sprache und Literatur (House of Language and Literature) in Bonn. She died in 2009 in Bonn.
