Opera singer with a wide vocal range. His father was a train driver. He sang from an early age and after he was noticed by the Grand Duke of Hesse Darmstadt he was enabled to study with Carl Beines and Paul Ottenheimer.

After his career start in Darmstadt in 1928 he held engagements in Königsberg, Stettin, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Mannhem and Karlsruhe and made guest appearances in Milan, Bordeaux, Marseilles, New York and San Francisco.

He married the soprano Margarete Düren (1904-1988) after he had met her in Dresden. They performed together several times. In Dresden he was engaged at the Semper Oper and he sang in several Wagner productions. After the war he went to Berlin. After his divorce he married again and had a daughter. On doctor's advice he took a long break in 1955, but on his way to Switzerland he died in Hildesheim.
