Maria Björnson was a great-granddaughter of Björnstjerne Björnson, who won the Noble Prize for Literature in 1903. Her father was a businessman and her mother came from Romania. She studied at the Byam School of Art and at the Central School of Art and Design in London. She designed sets and costumes for opera, theatre and ballet. Her design for "Phantom of the Opera" won her the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design and other prizes. In total she created the designs for 126 productions. She died in 2002 in London. |
