Boris Blacher was born at a time when his parents were living in a Russian speaking community in China. He grew up in China and in the Chinese parts of Russia. In 1919 he moved to Harbin, China. After he finished school there he studied architecture and mathematics in Berlin. In 1924 he switched to music and studied composition with Friedrich Ernst Koch. He became a teacher at the conservatory in Dresden and his "Concertante Musik für Orchester" (1937) made him well known. But in 1939 he lost his position because the nazis considered his music degenerate. After the war he continued his career and in 1953 he became the presidnet of the der Berliner Hochschule für Musik. He married the pianist Gerty Herzog. Their daughter Kolja Blacher is a well known violinist and daughter Tatjana Blacher is an actress. |
