She was the yonger sister of Maria (1926-2005), Carl (1927-2019) and Maximilian Schell (1930-2014) who all became actors like herself. After she took acting lessons with her mother at the Conservatory in Bern she debuted in 1954 as Gretchen in Goethe's "Faust". She used the name Edith Nordberg to avoid confusion with her sister Maria. In 1956-1957 she worked in Düsseldorf and in 1959-1960 in Frankfurt am Main.

In 1958 she appeared in her first movie, "Nachtschwester Ingeborg". In the same year she had a role in "Mädchen in Uniform". After a few years she resumed using her own name. She appeared in further movies, but she mostly concentrted on the theatre. From 1965 to 1967 she worked at the Renaissance-Theater in Berlin. She was married to the actor Walter Cohut and she died in 1992 in Vienna.
