Otto Benesch was the son of the art collector Heinrich Benes, one of the first supporters of Egon Schiele. He studied art History with Max Dvorák at Vienna University and he was promoted in 1921 with a dissertation on Rembrandt. In 1923 he necame an assistant at the Albertina in Vienna and he was promoted to curator later. In 1938 he was dismissed bacause his wife was Jewish. From 1940 he lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts and he worked at Harvard and Princeton. In 1947 he returned to Vienna to become the director of the Albertina. He held this position until 1962. In 1948 he became a professor for art history as well. He died in 1964 in Vienna.
