Hugh Talbot Bourgoyne was the son of the army officer Sir John Fox Bourgoyne (1782-1871). He entered the Royal Navy and in 1855 he distinguished himself during the Crimean War. For this he received the Victorian Cross. In 1859 Burgoyne Bay in British Columbia was named after him.

He achieved the rank of captain and he was in command of the HMS Captain when the ship kapsized during a gale near Cape Finisterre in 1870. He met his death there and his body was buried at Brompton Cemetery in London.
