Domenico Maggessi was educated as a sculptor by Bartolem in his native Carrere in Tuscany. He moved to France and settled in Bordeaux in 1829. After he successfully applied for working on the facade of the Saint-Seurin Church he became official sculptor in Bordeaux in 1832 and he held this position until 1888. In 1833 he was elected into the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Bordeaux but he left it in 1850.

In his studio in Bordeaux he created busts of many notables, among them Auguste Ravez, Theodore Ducos, Jean-Jacques Bosc and Pierre Lacour fils. His statues can be found at several public places in Bordeaux. René Princeteau was his pupil.
