Carl von Mérode came from a noble Belgian family. From 1870 to 1876 he studied at the Academy in Vienna, where Anselm Feuerbach was his teacher from 1873 onwards. The famous ballerina Cléo de Meroda was born in 1875 and is often assumed to be his daughter, but she may have been the daughter of his elder suster Vincnetia (1850-1899). In 1882 Karl von Merode married Leopoldine Lang (1859-1934).

In his work he often portrayed scenes from life in Vienna. His work was popular and he received many prizes and awards. In 1900 he started a painting school for women together with Adolf Kaufmann.
