Bonaventura studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome where Ottorino Respighi was one of his teachers. From 1922 to 1923 he worked as a conductor in Paris. From 1925 to 1934 he was artistic director of the spiritual concerts at the Borromini room in Rome,

For many years he taught at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He was the founder of the Polyphonic Choir of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and its director until his death. He was also the director of the musical chapel of San Luigi dei Francesi from 1926 until his death. He worked with many famous conductors like Von Karajan and Toscanini.
