Cara van Wersch was born in Heerlen as the daughter of the owner of a painting company. She was inspired by her niece Thea Eijssen (1905-1979) to pursue an acting career, but she was rejected by a Dutch theatre company because her 'g' was too soft. She found employment in Belgium and worked at the Koninklijke Nederlandse Schouwburg van Antwerpen from 1936 to 1956. There she often appeared with Gella Allaert, Hector Camerlynck and Dora van der Groen. In 1950 she married the widower Paul Glassée (1903-1965). They had no children. From 1952 onwards she corresponded intimately for several years with the writer Johan Daisne. They did not meet until 1956, more or less against his wishes. Apart from acting, she was also active as a yoga teacher and she taught Russian at evening schools. Later in her career she appeared in several films and television productions. In 1982 she played the mother in the film "Het Beest". She died in 2000 in Antwerpen. Her body was donated to science but she has a grave at Schoonselfhof, Antwerpen. |
