Rolf Olsen was born as Robert Knoblich. He was the son of a merchant. He was educated at the Gymnasium at the Theresianische Akademie in Vienna. After his graduation he took acting lessons. He appeared on the Bielitz, Gablonz and Linz. In Vienna he performed at the Theater in der Josefstadt and in cabarets. From 1941 to 1943 he was a soldier in the army. After the Second World War he founded his own cabaret "Das kleine Brettl" and he toured in Switzerland and Germany. From 1947 onwards he wrote films and acted in them. From 1961 he directed movies as well. In 1958 he married the actress Ilse Peternell. He continued his career until 1990 and appeared in over 60 films. In 1998 he died of cancer in Starnberg.
