Wanda Grohs was the daughter of Hermann Grohs, the owner of Düsterwalde manor. Her mother was Marie von Schleussing. She was educated privately by tutors and he mother gave her music lessons. In 1882 she married watercolor painter Hans von Bartels. They lived in Hamburg and from 1885 in Munich. Their son Wolfgang (1883-1938) was a pianist and their daughter Wera (1886-1922) was a sculptor and a painter. From 1882 Wanda von Bartels wrote for magazines and she also wrote short novels and plays. In 1897 her novellette "Aus dem Sonnenflimmern" was published and in 1900 her play "Die Hölle" followed.
