Hans Bartels was the son a welathy attaché of the Russian government in Germany, Dr. N.F.F. von Bartels. He suffered health problems during his youth and often stayed in Switzerland. He studied painting under Rudolf Hardorff, Adolph Schweitzer and Carl Oesterley senior. In 1882 he married Wanda Grohs. Together they travelled to Italy and other countries before they moved from Hamburg to Munich in 1885. In 1891 he was appointed Professor of Painting. In 1887 he visited Katwijk in the Netherlands for the first time. He returned to Katwijk every year until his death to paint the sea and the fishermen. He died in 1913 in Munich.
