Alexander Bauer studied mathematics and natural science at the Polytechnikum in Vienna. At the laboratory of the Schottenfelder Realschule he met Francesco Filippuzzi. In 1856 he became assistant to Anton Schrötter von Kristelli. In 1858 he obtained an engagement as assistant teacher at the Trade Academy in Vienna. In 1859 he visited Charles Adolphe Wurtz in Paris for study. He was promoted in Giessen and in 1861 he became Professor of Chemistry at the Trade Academy. He also taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and at the Technische Hochschule.

He had three children by his first wife Emilie Russell before she died of pneumonia on 22 March 1874. On 27 December 1875 he married the 17-year-old Natalie Lechner. They had no further children and the marriage failed in 1885. From 1884 until his retirement in 1904 he was the rector of the Technische Hochschule. He died in 1921 in Vienna.
