Johan, baron d'Aulnis de Bourouill was a descendent of the huegenot Pierre Louis d'Aulnis de Bourouill, who fled France after the Edict of Nantes was recalled in 1685. He studied law a Leiden University and was promoted in 1874 on his thesis "Het inkomen der maatschappij. Eene proeve van theoretische staathuishoudkunde". In 1878 he was appointed professor at Utrecht University. From 1899 onwards he was an editor of "De Economist" and from 1912 until his death he was a collaborator of that magazine. In 1917 he retired from his professorship.

He had married Elisabeth Wilhelmina Malvina Twiss in 1887 and they had a daughter. Ferdinand Folef d'Aulnis de Bourouill (1850-1925) was his twin brother.
