Giovanni Scheiwiller was the son of Swiss parents. His father was also named Giovanni Scheiwiller (1858-1904). Giovanni junior was educated in Schwyz and at the Benedictine Monastery Einsiedeln. In 1908 he started working for Librairie Durckhardt in Geneva. In 1909 he entered into the service of the Hoepli International Bookshop, where his father had worked until his death in 1904. In 1911 he worked in Paris and Zurich, but in 1913 he returned to Hoepli. In 1915 he went to Madrid and New York for work and in 1916 he returned once more to Hoepli, where he directed the French section. In 1917 he married Artemia, the daughter of his friend Adolfo Wildt. In 1926 he obtained Italian citizenship. He became the Attorney General of the Casa Libraria Ulrico Hoepli in 1930. In 1936 he founded his own publishing business "All'insegna del Pesce d'Oro" that he would transfer to his son Vanni Scheiwiller in later years.
