Imre Nagy was the son of the marchant József Nagy. He left school early. In 1864 he debuted on the stage in Subotica. From 1865 to 1866 he performed in Debrecen. In 1870 he was contracted by the National Theatre. He debuted there on 15 February 1870 as Álmos in "Könyves Kálmán" and he worked there until his death.

On 11 March 1873 he married the opera singer Ida Benza in Pest. She died in 1880. From 1889 he worked as a director and from 1890 he also taught at the Academy of Arts. In 1892 he suffered a nervous breakdown and on 5 September 1893 he killed himself with a gunshot.
