Hanns Obonya played smaller parts in movies from an early age. In the 1950s he was engaged by the theatre in Graz where he played the title part in "Kain" by Anton Wildgans in 1951. He moved to the Burgtheater in Vienna where he performed in a broad reoertoire, including Shakespeare, Raimund and Nestroy. In 1963 he was in Dürrenmatt's "Die Physiker" at the Akademietheater. During the 1960s he appeared in television productions in Austria and Germmany and he performed frequently at the Festspiele in Salzburg. In Hoffmannthal's "Jedermann" he played the poor neighbour for several years. He was married to the actress Elisabeth Orth, who was a daughter of Paula Wessely and Attila Hörbiger. His son Cornelius Obonya (b.1969) became an actor as well. |
