Hanns Blaschke was the son of a tax official. He interrupted his electrical engineering studies at Vienna University after the First World War broke out. He served in the army and after the war he continued his studies, finishing them in 1922. From 1926 he worked as a patent attorney.

By 1931 he was a member of the Austrian NSDAP and he participated in the putsch of July 1934. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, but after two years he was released. After Germany annexed Austria in 1938 he joined the SS. He became an alderman in Vienna, then vice-Mayor and om 30 December 1943 he succeeded P.W. Jung as mayor of Vienna. He held this post until Vienna was taken by the Russians in April 1945. In 1948 he was convicted of high treason and sentenced to six years imprisonment and the confiscation of his property. He lost his citizenship and his titles, but that was reversed in 1958 after he made an appeal. He died in 1971 in Salzburg. His daughter Gertrud Barna was an actress.
