Ulrich Bettac studied at the Schauspielschule des Deutschen Theaters in Berlin. From 1917 to 1918 he was engaged at the Hoftheater in Oldenburg and from 1919 to 1921 at the Neues Theater in Frankfurt am Main. After that he worked in Berlin. In 1927 he was engaged at the Burgtheater in Vienna. From 1921 to 1931 he also appeared in a number of movies.

Before the 'anschluss' of Austria he was a member of the illegal SA-Brigade 6 and after the anschluss he became deputy regional director of the Reichstheaterkammer. He joined the NSDAP in 1938. From 23 August 1938 to 30 April 1939, he was the temporary director of the Burgtheater after Lothar Müthel had suffered a car accident.

After the Second World War he appeared in movies again from 1949 until his death in 1959. He died in Vienna and he was buried in a honorary grave at the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna. In 2020 the status of his grave was changed to 'Historische Grabstelle' ('Historical important grave').
