Ralf Badenhausen lived with his family in Berlin-Pankow from 1912. He studied philosophy, German, art history and theatre in Berlin from 1926 and in Munich from 1929. In 1930 he was promoted. In 1931 was angaged as assistant at the Theatermuseum in Munich. In 1935 Otto Falckenburg contracted him for the Kammerspiele in Munich. There he met Elisabeth Flickenschild and he married her in 1936 in Berlin. In 1939 he succeeded Georg Dröschler as the director of the Museum of the Prussian State Theatre in Berlin. From 1941 to 1943 he worked under Gustaf Gründgens as dramaturge. In 1944 he divorced Elisabeth but they remained close friends. After the war he taught Theatre History at the University in Munich. From 1947 to 1951 he was chief dramaturge and deputy general director at the Schauspielhaus in Düsseldorf. He was also the director of the theatre school in Düsseldorf. At first he had to live in a former bunker but after both he and Elisabeth told they would leave Gründgens was able to provide them with better facilities in 1947. After Gustaf Gründgens left Düsseldorf fot Hamburg in 1954, Badenhausen moved to the Staatstheater in Stuttgart. There he was personal asisstant to general director Walter Erich Schäfer as well as teacher. From 1960 to 1972 he was professor of theatre studies at the University of Cologne and director of the Theatre Museum in that city.. At the Theatre Museum he met the student Ingrid Nohl (b.1947). She became his assistant, his biographer and his second wife. In 1969 and 1970 he was guest professor in Montreal. He retired in 1972 where he lived i nthe same house as fifty years before. He died there 1987 and was buried near Elisabeth Flickenschild in Bernau am Chiemsee.
