Lena Amsel came from a Jewish family of merchants. In 1914 she went to Dresden and in 1915 she moved on to Berlin. There she met Max Reinhardt and Karl Vollmoeller. With Vollmoeller she conducten an affair for several years although it was interrupted by three short marriages that all ended in divorce. She worked as a dancer and between 1917 and 1923 she played in several movies. Her last movie was "The Mighty Dollar" (1923). In 1927 she went to Paris. There she had an affair with Louis Aragon until his future wife Elsa Triolet forced her to leave him. She lost her life in 1929 after a visit to André Derain's studio with her friend Florence Piton. On their way back to Paris she tried to overtake Derain in her Bugatti, but she lost control and her car overturned and caught fire.
