The bariton Franz Glawatsch worked as a typesetter before he decided to enter the stage in 1894. He held is first engagement in Budweis. In 1895 he worked in Marburg and in 1896 he went to Graz where he stayed for four years.

In 1900 Alexander Girardi helped him to an engagement at the Carltheater in Vienna and from 1903 to 1916 he was a member of the ensemble of the Theater an der Wien. From 1907 onwards he was the chief director at the Theater and der Wien as well as the Raimundtheater. He made guest appearances in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Paris. He also appeared in several movies. He died in 1928 in Vienna. His son Franz Glawatsch junior was an opera singer as well.
