During the 1970s Fred Chichin played in the bands Fassbinder, Taxi Girl and Gazoline. In 1979 he met singer Cathérine Ringer (b.1957) and in 1980 they founded the band Les Rita Mitsouko. They lived together for the rest of his life.

In 1985 they had a hit in France with "Marcia Baila", a song dedicated to their former dance teacher Marcia Moretto who had died aged 32. Their 1994 single "Y'a d'l' haine" was an international success. Chichin suffered from hepatitis C and many concerts of the band were cancelled. In 2007 he was diagnosed with cancer and he died only two months later.
