Daughter of a lawyer and of Maria Lichtenegg, a court actress in Saxony. In 1930 she took acting lessons and in 1935 she debuted at the State Theatre in Dresden in Hauotmann's "Und Pippa tanzt". She stayed at the State Theatre until 1939.

She also had a contract with the film production company Tobis, but after she made two movies in 1936 she quarrelled with Joseph Goebbels. After that she was unable to obtain any more movie parts, but she remained active in the theatre. She met Martin Bormann and became his lover.

After the War she performed in Dresden and East-Berlin. She married scenery builder Karl von Appen in 1958 and she made several movies for DEFA. After her affair with Bormann became public in the 1960s she had hardly any movie parts for twenty years. From 1967 until the end of the DDR in 1991 she was engaged at the Gorki Theatre in Berlin. In 1974 she received the Kunstpreis of the DDR.
