Johanna Hofer was born Johanna Stern in Berlin. Her fasther was an engineer and her mother Lisbeth Schmidt was the younger sister of the artist Käthe Kollwitz. She was educated at the theatre academy in Berlin and in 1916 she was engaged by the Städtischen Bühnen in Frankfurt am Main. In 1919 she joined the Volksbühne in Berlin and subsequently the Staatliche Schauspielhaus. In 1924 she married the actor Fritz Kortner. In 1933 they emigrated and they moved to the USA in 1938. In 1943 she had a small part in Douglas Sirk's movie "Hitler's Madman". In 1947 they returned to Germany and at the Kammerspiele in München she was very successful under the direction of her husband. She also continued her movie career and appeared on the stage in Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" in Bochum and in Berlin. Her husband died in 1970 but she continued her career until at least 1984.
