In 1919 Karl Ludwig Diehl visited the school of the Deutsche Theater in Berlin. He held theatre engagements in Wiesbaden and Munich. In 1924 he made his movie debut in "'Die Tragödie der Entehrten" and from 1929 onwards many more movies followed. In 1930 he married Mary von Ruffin (1909-2002), a sister of the actor Kurt von Riffin.

During the thirties he was among the most popular German actors and in 1939 Joseph Goebbels gave him the title of Staatsschauspieler (Actor of State). After the war he concentrated his career on the theatre.
