Hansi Knoteck was the daughter of the manager of an insurance company. She was the great niece of the actress Katharina Schratt. After an education as a ballet dancer she attended the Akademie für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. She held engagements at theatres in Mährisch-Ostrau, Marienbad and Leipzig before she went to Berlin, where she started her movie career. She debuted in Ludwig Ganghofer's "Schloss Hubertus" (1934) and her part in "Der Zigeunerbaron" (1935) made her well known. Other movies included "Fürst Woronzeff" (1934), "Waldrausch" (1939) and "Venus vor Gericht". In 1940 she married the actor Viktor Staal and in 1942 they had a son, Hannes.

After the war they invested in a building with offices and appartments in the Schwabing area of Munich. Her movie parts became smaller and in the 1950s she mostly appeared in Heimatfilms. In 1974 she made a short come back in "Der Jäger von Fall" and after that she left the movies forever. She died a few days before her 100th birthday.
