Adolphe Lemoine was the younger brother of the playwright Gustave Lemoine, who married the composer Loïsa Puget. To spare his brother embarrassment he took the name of Montigny. Together with Henri-Horace Meyer he took charge of the Théâtre de la Gaîté and in 1844 he became the director of the Théâtre du Gymnase. Under his managmeent it became one of the leading theatres in Paris where plays by Balzac, George Sand and Dumas fils were staged. In 1847 he married the actress Rose Chéri. She died in 1861 at their house at the rue Saint-Pierre in Passy of diphtheria after nursing their son Joseph. Adolphe died twenty years later in the same house.
