The social democrat Friedrich Austerlitz came from a poor family and started working when he was fourteen years old. But he was intelligent and ambitious and managed to develop himself. When he was 25 years old he was noticed by Victor Adler, who employed his at his paper Arbeiter-Zeitung. When the Arbeiter-Zeitung became a daily paper in 1895 Austerlitz succeeded Adler as editor-in-chief. In 1898 he left Judaism.

He was a member of the Social democratic Workers Party and he strongly supported a free press. In 1920 he was elected into Austria's Nationalrat and he was a member until his death in 1931, with three re-elections.
