Josef Achmann was studied at the Art Academ in Munich. In 1908 and 1911 he worked in his own studio in Regensburg. From 1912 to 1914 he lived in Paris. In 1917 he exhibited in Munich together with Grosz, Pechstein and Heckel. With his friend the poet Georg Britting he founded the expressionist publication "Die Sichel" (1919-1921). In 1927 he travelled to Italy. In 1935 the nazis prohibited him to work and his paintings were removed from public collections. In 1949 he received the Art Prize of the City of Munich. From 1940 until his death in 1958 he lived in Schliersee. His wife was the actress Magda Lena (born Magdalena von Perfall).
