Ferdinand Bonn was the son of the author Franz Bonn (1830-1894). His mother was Bertha Promoli. When he was at school he already created his own theatre pieces in which he performed. He studied law in Munich, but turned his attention first to painting and then to acting. He took lessons with Ernst Possart and in 1885 he debuted at the Stadttheater in Nürnberg. In the same year he appeared at the Deutschen Theater in Moscow. Further stations were Munich and Vienna.

In 1905 in Berlin he founded Ferdinand Bonns Berliner Theater and two years he was its manager. Some years later he went bankrupt and after that he went on theatre tours. In 1913 he played the main part in "Ludwig II von Bayern". In 1920 he played Ludwig II again in "Das Schweigen am Starnberger See". Between 1920 and 1924 he mostly perforemd in Austrian movies. Later in his career his parts became smaller. He died in 1933 in Berlin.
