Jean Claude Bonnefond was the son of a baker, who died soon after his birth. He was educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons, where Pierre Révoil and Alexis Grognard were his teachers. In 1817 he first exhibited at the Salon in Paris and Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry bought one of his paintings. Around 1824 he joined the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin in Paris together with Victor Orsel. After Guérin became the director of the Villa Medici in Rome he accompanied him to that city. In Italy he also visited Campania and Tuscany. After his return to Lyons he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts and he became its director in 1830. He held that position for 30 years. In 1834 he received the Légion d'honneur. He painted in Italian style until 1840 and produced portraits af that. His work is in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyons.
