Daughter of a goldsmith from Vienna. She had a fine soprano voice and she appeared with Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient at the Opera in Dresden and with Jenny Lind at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. In 1849 she successfully appeared in London. For a long time she had an affair with the banker Moritz von Todesco and between 1841 and 1852 she had seven illegitimate children. Two daughters were fathered by Todesco and one son by the architect Peter Cavaliere di Galvagni (1797-1868). In 1862 she married the composer Johann Strauss (the younger), whom she had known for fifteen years. They lived at the Praterstrasse 54 (their house is now a museum). She organised his concert tours and negotiated his contracts and she stimulated him to write operettas, resulting in "Die Fledermaus". During the last five years of her life he betrayed her with other women. She died in 1878 and he left the funeral arrangements to his brother Eduard and wasn't there when she was buried. Seven weeks later he married Ernestine Henriette Angelika Dittrich. Family Husband: Strauss, Johann (The Younger) (1862-1878, Wien: Stephansdom) |
