Son of the bank official Ignaz Ferstel. He studied at the Academy for Architecture in Vienna and a grant from the emperor enabled him to travel to Italy in 1855. Just before he left he entered the competition for the Votivkirche and in Naples he heard the news that he had won. Apart from the Votivkirch he built several buildings in the city center of Vienna and in the Ringstrasse surrounding it. The building at the Freyung in Vienna is now known as the Palais Ferstel. He had married Lotte Fehlmann and with his family he lived in Grinzing, then a small village. After his death in 1883 he was buried there at the cemetery.
