Son of the portrait painter John Butler Yeats (1839-1922). The famous author William Butler Yeats was his older brother. He grew up in Sligo in Ireland with his maternal grandparents and moved to London to learn painting.

He was sympathetic to the Irish Republican cause, but no activist. He was very much interested in theatre and literature and Samuel Beckett was a close friend. Another friend was Oskar Kokoschka.

He is often seen as the national painter of Ireland and many of his works can be found at the National Gallery in Dublin.
