Fritz Wunderlich was the son of a choir-master. His mother was a violinist. For a while his family owned the "Emrichs Bräustübl". After the nazis came to power his father lost his job and he committed suicide when Fritz was five years old. He worked in a bakery but started studying music as well and a scholarship enabled him to study French horn and voice in Freiburg. He soon made himself a name as a tenor, especially in Mozart pieces. He also sang minor Wagner parts. Wunderlich made several recordings and worked with Herbert von Karajan. When he was on a hunting vacation in 1966 he fell from a stairway in the house of a friend in Oberdingen and he died afterwards in the University Clinic of Heidelberg, not yet 36 years old. His wife, the harpist Eva Jungnitsch, lived until 2016 and was buried beside him at the Waldfriedhof in Munich. Related persons cooperated with Karajan, Herbert von |
