Caroline von Lengefeld was the daughter of Carl Christoph von Lengefeld from Rudolstadt and the sister of Charlotte von Lengefeld, the wife of Friedrich Schiller. She married the older Friedrich von Beulwitz when she was sixteen years old, but they had no children and she left him in 1790 and moved to Gaisberg and Cannstadt. In 1794 they were divorced. In August 1796 she married her cousin Wilhelm von Wolzogen, Friedrich Schiller's friend who was steward at the court in Weimar.

She had started writing her first novel "Agnes von Lilien" in 1793 and it was published anonynomously in 1798. At the time, many people thought that it was written by Goethe. It was illegaly reprinted several times and in 1802 it was translated into French.

After Schiller, her husband, her sister and her only son had all died she left Weimar in 1825 and moved to Jena. There she lived until the end of her life in a house that was offered to her by grand duchess Maria Pavlovna. In Jena she published "Schillers Leben" (1830), the first biography of Schiller. Her second novel "Cordelia" (1840) was autobiographical.
